How earthquakes occur.

Earthquakes mostly happen along a tectonic plate boundary. However, some earthquakes happen in the centre of two plates. For example, in China in 1975 a huge earthquake happened between two plate boundaries. This is because when two plates move and get stuck, the pressure builds up. Then, when they finally move, they suddenly and unexpectedly make the earth move. Also they can occur because if they rub together they can move the earth.

Key Definitions:

Epicentre – the point on the Earth’s surface directly above the focus.

Focus – the place where two plates collide.
