The Analytical Engine was a mechanical general-purpose computer designed by English mathematician and first person to explore computers Charles Babbage. It was first known as the successor to Babbage’s difference engine in 1837, a design for a simpler mechanical computer.

-It is generally acknowledged however that the design was correct and that the engine would have worked.
